Site of Hopewell Evangelical Lutheran Church
Also Known As
Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church & Cemetery
This was the site of the first Lutheran Church in Pike Township.
In 1836, the land was donated by John Klingensmith for the church and cemetery. The Hopewell Evangelical Lutheran church held services here until 1855 and then was moved to New Augusta, IN. The church no longer stands, but the cemetery continues to be used by the congregation. The current building, built in 1880, is known as Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church and is located at 72nd Street and Pollard Streets in New Augusta, Indiana.
This plaque honors those members of the congregation who have gone before us.
This plaque erected jointly by members of Salem Lutheran Church and
The Pike Township Historical Society.
